Winter in the Hills!
Winter in the hills is... well.... magic, I guess... it's cold and misty outside and warm in by the fire. Nothing for it but to brew a large, hot mug of hot chocolate and snuggle under the cosy rug waiting for me in the armchair. And a good book! Ahhh.... lovely! The holidays are here, and what better way to debrief from the stresses that follow us to work and back every day! Leave yourself behind and take a journey into someone else's imagined world. Do this every day for a brief but welcome respite, then you can return to your own world refreshed and ready to take on the world.
Right how I'm doing just that with Geraldine Brooks' Caleb's Crossing. This beautifully crafted story of seventeenth century American Indian history meets the culture of new white settlement on the isolated island Eden of Martha's Vineyard has found itself fallen into the skilled and compassionate hands of this accomplished writer. She tells the story of a young, native American Indian whose life's journey is intertwined with Bethia, daughter of white settlers from the new world. The pair negotiate the prohibitions of a cultural divide to forge a unique and secret relationship.
Well, that's where I'm up to so far...like the best books, I don't want to put it down... so, back to it!
